Are you experiencing a breakout or redness in your skin after embarking on a new skincare journey? #WhatIsSkinPurging? | 1 Minute Read.
So what is “purging”?
You can understand it as a rigorous cleaning process that is occurs in our skin triggered by the introduction of new active ingredient to our skin.
These active ingredients exfoliate off the unwanted skin debris from the surface of the skin & unclog pores.
Skin impurities that were previously hiding underneath the thick layer of dead cells and sebum will reveal itself at the surface of the skin. Coupled with faster skin cell regeneration, these impurities will reach the surface quicker, resulting in what we think is an acne breakout but is, in fact, skin purging.
Although it can be distressing, purging is a necessary phase that some skin has to go through to remove the unwanted impurities to expose the healthier layer.
The “intensity” of skin purging depends on the amount of impurities, skincare routine suitability, environmental factors, as well as lifestyle habits. Generally “purging phase” can last from 2-12 weeks depending on individual skin condition, involving area on our face where it is usually more congested.
(“Purging” can present as white head, black head, acneiform eruptions, skin redness, skin flakiness, etc.)
