Feeling Itchy or Painful After Applying a Product?

Some skincare ingredients can cause mild tingling or warmth as they begin working on your skin. This is common with: AHAs & BHAs (Exfoliating Acids), Vitamin C or Retinol.

(Not all discomfort is normal—sometimes, it’s your skin signaling you that a product isn’t suitable.)

Ingredients that commonly cause mild tingling:

  • AHAs & BHAs (Exfoliating Acids) – These ingredients remove dead skin cells and may cause temporary stinging, especially if your skin is sensitive or dry.
  • Vitamin C – High concentrations can create a tingling sensation as they penetrate the skin to brighten and fight free radicals.
  • Retinol – This potent anti-aging ingredient can cause temporary irritation.

Here’s how to tell the difference:

  • Irritation – If your skin turns red or stings but calms down after a short while, it may just be a temporary reaction.
  • Allergic Reaction – If you experience itching, swelling, rashes, or small bumps, stop using the product immediately and wash your face. Allergic reactions can worsen over time.

(A mild tingling that fades quickly is usually normal. However, if the discomfort lingers or worsens, your skin may not tolerate the product well. )

If you have sensitive skin, it’s always best to do a patch test on a small area before incorporating a new skincare product into your routine. Reactions like redness, irritation, or breakouts can be avoided with a patch test.
